About the event

The City of Como and the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, in collaboration with the cultural association Il Paguro, present a series of six lectures on the major currents of contemporary thought and on peace, approached through its many cultural, social and historical forms.

The series grew out of the urgency of the subject. It offers the community a chance to reflect in depth on what peace means, understood not simply as the absence of war.

Entry is free. The lectures take place on Fridays, from 16 October to 20 November 2026. The programme lists speakers from the universities of Milano Bicocca, Pavia, Insubria (Como and Varese) and Oxford Brookes.

Getting to Como

By car, Como is on the A9 motorway from Milan towards Chiasso and Ticino (exit Como Nord for Villa Olmo); from Varese the SS342 and from Lecco the SS639 lead into the city. Como San Giovanni, the main station, has the S11 suburban line to Milan every 30 minutes and the hourly RE80 Milan–Como–Lugano–Locarno, plus TILO trains from Ticino and Varese; it is step-free, with lifts to the platforms. Como Lago, on the lakefront, is the terminus of the Trenord line from Milano Cadorna via Saronno. The bus station is in Piazza Matteotti, and since December 2025 a Flibco shuttle has linked Como San Giovanni with Malpensa airport.

Ferry: Boats and hydrofoils for the whole lake leave from the pier on Lungo Lario Trieste by Piazza Cavour, a few minutes from Como Lago station. Hydrofoils reach Bellagio in about 45 minutes, Tremezzo in about 40, Menaggio in under an hour and Varenna in about an hour; the slow boats take about two hours to Bellagio. The short hop to Cernobbio takes 10 to 15 minutes. The pier is on one level, with tactile paths and staff trained to assist.

Parking: The city's multi-storey car parks include Autosilo Auguadri, Autosilo Valduce and Autosilo Castelnuovo, and the free Como Rapid Parking app shows free spaces in real time. Cheaper options outside the centre: the Val Mulini car park (6:30–21:00) costs €1.00 a day and is linked to the centre by city buses; the car park in Via Conciliazione at Tavernola is free, with boats or buses 6 and 11 into town; and the Lazzago park-and-ride at Grandate costs €1.00 (Monday to Saturday, free on holidays), with trains into Como. Motorhomes have areas at Ippocastano (Via A. Moro) and Tavernola.

About Como

Como is the city at the southern tip of the lake's western arm, about 40 kilometres north of Milan. Inside the medieval walls, whose most visible survivor is the 40-metre Porta Torre of 1192, the centre is a grid of lanes that goes back to the Roman town. The cathedral, begun in 1396 and finished with Filippo Juvarra's dome in the 18th century, has one of the finest late-Gothic façades in northern Italy, with statues of Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, both born in Como; beside it stands the Broletto, the medieval town hall.
