Getting to Menaggio
By car from Milan (about 80 km), take the A9 towards Chiasso, leave at the last Italian exit, Lago di Como, and follow the SS340 to Menaggio; from Lugano (27 km) the road crosses the border at Gandria. Menaggio has no railway; the nearest station is Varenna-Esino-Perledo across the lake, 15 minutes by boat or car ferry from a pier a few hundred metres below the station. From Como San Giovanni or Como Lago, ASF bus C110 (Como–Argegno–Menaggio–Colico) takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and ASF C112 runs from Menaggio to Porlezza and Lugano. Buses leave from Piazza Roma, and tickets must be bought before boarding, at the bus station or by app.
Ferry: Boats and hydrofoils call at the Menaggio pier; hydrofoils reach Como in under an hour. The car ferry crosses to Varenna in about 15 minutes and also links Menaggio with Bellagio, from early morning to late evening; a day ticket for the central lake covers Menaggio, Varenna, Bellagio, Cadenabbia and the Tremezzina piers. The pier is on one level, with tactile paths, a braille map and staff trained to assist.
About Menaggio
Menaggio lies on the west shore in the middle of Lake Como, where the valley to Lake Lugano opens, facing Bellagio and Varenna across the water. Its heart is Piazza Garibaldi, ringed by cafés, and a long lakeside promenade; behind it, cobbled lanes climb to Castello, the medieval quarter on the site of the castle the Grisons burned in 1523. The town also takes in the hamlets of Loveno, Nobiallo and Croce, about 3,200 people in all.
